Job opportunities at Te Korowai o Waiheke!
Have you ever considered a job in conservation? Whether you want to just dip your toes in or lay the foundations for a career in the field, Te Korowai o Waiheke has some great opportunities coming up.
The rat pilot, set to begin operations on May 2nd, will need seven more field team technicians on the ground to service devices in the operational trial network across Ostend, Kennedy Point and Rocky Bay.
"This is a unique opportunity for those on the island looking to contribute to the community and conservation work on Waiheke," says Training and Recruitment Coordinator Rosemary Thorne.
"You could be a school leaver, a volunteer, a seasonal worker looking for a winter gig, have experience in pest or predator control, or just interested in working in nature. These positions are open to those who are fit, practical and comfortable working outdoors in all weathers.”
Te Korowai o Waiheke is a charitable trust that was established by the local community to eradicate predators from Waiheke Island. The ambition to become predator free would make Waiheke the largest inhabited predator-free island in the world.
The roles lay a sturdy foundation for those wanting field experience before study or a taster for those wanting to continue in conservation work. With Predator Free 2050 stretching out for the next 28 years the employment opportunities in the space are growing with each new initiative.
The roles are fixed-term contracts from mid-April to September with the potential for a longer period. For successful applicants, training will be provided by a mix of Te Korowai o Waiheke team members and other specialists in conservation and pest management.
Good communication, relationship management skills, and a can-do attitude are necessary. Animal pest management or relevant conservation experience would be an advantage.
The successful applicant will be adaptable, a team player, but also a self-starter who is committed to maintaining consistently high standards of work. You must hold a current driver's licence and first aid certificate.
If you are interested and want to know more, please contact Rosemary Thorne on 0274988076 or please email your application to rosemary@tekorowaiowaiheke.org. Please provide a cover letter and your C.V. Applications will close on 17th March 2022.
