Rat Species

The common species of rats that are found on Waiheke Island are the Norway rat and the ship rat.

The Norway rat has a short, thick tail which is shorter than its body and it has small ears. The ship rat is a slender rat with a tail that is longer than its body and has large ears. They can be grey-brown or black in colour.
