Stoat genome sequenced

The genetic code for our most wanted pest, the stoat, has been revealed.

The stoat genome, created by a team of Kiwi and international scientists, is one of the highest quality vertebrate genomes ever produced. Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research vertebrate pest ecologist Dr Andrew Veale led the research.

It’s hoped this new knowledge will help create tools, such as more efficient toxins, to target the introduced predators, and could be used to pinpoint stoat identity and spread.
