The celebration towards predator-free Waiheke — 4 Year Anniversary
A big thank you to everyone who came last Thursday evening to celebrate the journey towards a predator free Waiheke. It was stoat-ally great to see so many people attend and bring their excellent questions with them. A big thank you to Dr Andrew Veale for his insight into stoat genetics and for the in-depth analysis of Waiheke stoats.
How close are we from eradicating stoats from Waiheke? According to Andrews research:
• Last year only 2 – 5 litters were born on Waiheke.
• Some females he believes were unmated from the previous year, which is highly unusual given that elsewhere female stoats are always pregnant.
• A few males and females avoided traps for over a year before they were caught.
• Males are roaming now. Get them before they find the ladies!!!
• Find the dens now before juveniles start dispersing in early summer.
• If the island-wide trapping programme ceases, Waiheke will reach stoat carrying capacity within 1 - 2 years.
• With dogs, cameras, and new lures Andrew is very confident that Waiheke can succeed (becoming the world's largest ever stoat eradication).
As we head into the spring denning season, it has never been more important to report stoat sightings as soon as you see them. Call 0800 BIRDSONG or email info@tekorowaiowaiheke.org
