Look at the size of this rat!
This large Norway rat was found in one of Te Korowai o Waiheke's traps at Awaawaroa, an area of high bio-diversity. Norway rats attack birds that nest in holes or on the ground e.g. dotterels, korora (little blue penguin) and oi (grey faced petrel). They are strong and tenacious and will take eggs, chicks and the adults.
While the network of 1,500 traps across Waiheke Island is for the eradication of stoats, the traps have also caught 527 rodents since they were opened in February 2020. This is a great additional result to the 35 stoats caught so far #racetozero
